Oh you clicked on my profile! Yooo thank you so much, it's so nice to see you here! So while you're here, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Gabriel Velasco (he/him/his). I am a second year nursing major, and I am your 2021-2022 Alumni Liaison! With this position I will be officially in charge of things related to the alumni such as retaining speakers, requesting donations, maintaining and updating alumni directory, informing them of events, etc.

 

I was born in the Philippines, but I moved to San Francisco when I was 5 years old, and I have stayed in San Francisco up to the present day due to Covid. However, I will be moving down, and hopefully I will get to see you and talk to you in person, and that really excites me! I cannot state how excited I am for everything to be in person, like I just want to see everyone, have good times, and make more friends and memories! When I have free time, I love binge watching shows (big time fan of His Dark Materials, The Boys, The Witcher, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, and various other shows). I also love learning guitar songs periodically and hanging out with my friends whether that be watching or playing basketball, going on adventures, or going out to eat. One thing I also love is going to AB Samahan events and GBMs.

 

One of the many things I love about AB Samahan is that it allowed me to connect with other people even through the pandemic. I never would have thought that I would've made friends online because I thought that I would be in the same boat as my friends from high school who are in their second year of college as well but haven't really met anyone due to the distance presented by online courses. However, I had a history of learning about Filipino and Filipino-American culture through my high school organization, so at the beginning of the school year, I decided to join AB Samahan. I expected much of the same in terms of college courses, not really knowing anyone and just getting through the year to meet friends the second year. However, AB Samahan has helped me make friends within the community and feel less lonely during the pandemic. It is a testament to how good our community is and how great our events are at connecting people.
