My name is Maryhanna Leraas and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a second year Child and Family Development major and PreMed student. In case you didn’t see the big title under my name, I am the 2021-2022 Academic Coordinator! As the Academic Coordinator, my notable duties include hosting the Filipino New Student Orientation, Student Outreach and Academic Resources (SOAR) Board, High School Conference, and FGrad. This year I am introducing AB Samahan’s first Major Mixer in partnership with the KAA program! On top of those, I am also in charge of study sessions, scholarships, and anything that develops academic and career skills for our AB Samahan members.
A little about me! I was born and raised in San Diego, specifically East County (Lakeside). I played the viola for seven years, and I’ve been a theater kid my entire life. I’m also a water baby. I was a competitive swimmer for most of my life, so you can find me at the pool or at the beach fairly often (hmu to surf or get some laps in!). Crocheting has grip on my life, and I like making amigurumi. I’m a Cancer, but don’t worry, I think I’m fairly stable emotionally.
I am SUPER excited to be IN-PERSON (fingers crossed). My entire first year was online, so I’m going to do everything in my power to host safe and successful events in-person this year. I love AB Samahan because it accepts everyone. I have acquired the best support system and friend group through this organization. I have never before felt closer to my Filipino roots, nor have I felt such incredible love and support as a home away from home. I fully support our cause to advocate for social justice in the Philippines, as well as educate on our culture here in the US. I also like how our purpose within the org is outlined in our Pillars, each of which are encompassed by our shared culture. I am absolutely honored to be a part of the history and movement that this organization is built on.
For this next year, I look forward to elevating the role of the Academic pillar by promoting personal and career-based growth; I want to emphasize the importance of being proud of our culture and self-identity as we carve our place in higher academia as young, successful Philippine students.
Reach out to me at any time, for everything from study tips to anime recommendations! I look forward to seeing you at study sessions *wink wink nudge pls come to study sessions* :)
