Hey yall!

My name is Eugene Ruelos (He/Him/His), but I also go by EJ! I’m a second year Kinesiology Major with a Pre-Physical Therapy emphasis and am one of your Cooperative Cultural Affairs Coordinators for the 2020-2021 school year. You’ll be seeing a lot of information and material regarding Filipinx/Filipinx-American culture and heritage throughout the year, different events to bring our community back to our roots, as well as an amazing FCN season in the spring, all coming from your CoCos!

I was born and raised in Yokosuka, Japan and moved around a bit (Bangor WA, Lemoore CA, and back around a few times) as a part of a navy family until we settled in the San Diego back in 2014 and I’ve been here ever since! I spend a lot of my time learning and honing new ways to express myself, whether it be through art, dance, or song. In high school, I was a band kid (clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, and eventual drum major ahha ha ^-^) and also joined my high schools color guard team where I now coach! If I’m not binge watching Greys Anatomy or How I Met Your Mother, vibin’ to my 2000’s R&B, Oldies but Goldies, and Broadway jams playlists on Spotify, or coming up with choreo in my backyard, then im probably out traveling, exploring, eating, and having fun with friends and family!

My time during the start of quarantine was taken up by mundane hobbies such as gardening, watercolor painting, and sewing (shameless plug but check out our face mask shop on IG @needle.lil.love for all your face mask needs). Other than that, it’s been a lot of adventuring and hiking all around SD county with the best people I can ever ask for ÚwÙ (of course, only when its safe, with my mask on and lysol spray in hand :] ).

I became involved with the Filipinx community in middle school when my older sisters started bringing me to their cultural dance practices because they needed extra tinikling clappers. I was reluctant at first but that exposure sparked an interest that led me to wanting to join a p-org when I went to college. I joined AB Samahan to learn more about my culture but got so much more than just that out of it.

Before I knew it, I was a part of a loving and caring community that goes the extra mile in ensuring that you feel welcomed to the table despite being a relatively large organization. I was given resources I never knew I needed: academic tutoring, student advising, and cultural supplements; to personal guidance and friendships that’ll last a lifetime. Along with all of this, AB Samahan is such a diverse community to where there is almost a guarantee that you’ll find someone or something that suits your needs and interests!

I hope to serve you to the best of my ability and spark a passion for the Filipinx culture in our members. I can’t wait for yall to see what we have in store this year, despite the current situation we’ve found ourselves in; we aren't pulling back this year so yall better not hold back on us either >~<

Don’t be afraid to say hi! I’ll probably be the one making random noises or making ad libs no one asked to hear. If you’re shy, it’s ok me too DAJFSAFDS if anything we can be shy and awkward together :> N E WAYS, feel free to contact me anytime, whenever you need it, and even if you don’t :^)

Welcome to our pamilya!
