What’s GOOD y’all!!

My name is Eleanor Mauhay (she/her/hers) and I will be serving as your Asian American Pacific Islander Coalition (AAPIC) Liaison for the 2020-2021 academic year! As your AAPIC Liaison, I am the line of communication between AB Samahan, AAPIC, and other cultural organizations. I represent our organization’s best interests, and relay any information regarding events/plans to and from AAPIC.

I am a third year Biology major with a minor in Psychology. I was born and raised here in San Diego. I grew up as a military brat so I moved around the city a couple times throughout my early childhood years. Before coming back to SD, I lived in Yokosuka, Japan for six years, making it my second home (:

Since quarantine, I’ve picked up a couple new hobbies but also got back into some old ones. I started to experiment with gouache painting, which I find to enjoy more than any other medium. I began journaling as an emotional outlet and a way to gain mental clarity, learned new songs to play on my ukulele, occasionally worked out, and spent several afternoons at a park or friend’s house. I also binge-watched hella shows/movies on Netflix and Hulu. Some of my recent favorites include Criminal Minds, Good Trouble, and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.

Coming into college, I struggled to find my niche but luckily, I found a home away from home within Samahan. This organization created a sense of welcome and bayanihan for me after all the memories and experiences, especially meeting people I consider to be life-long friends.

Being a part of Samahan, I’ve grown to love and understand my cultural identity through standing with others for causes that are larger than myself. I’m not only a stronger individual because of my involvement, but also a stronger leader. I also serve on the Aztec Student Union Board as the Union Nights Chair so I hope I can be a resource to y’all in any way I can!

I know we’re in challenging and uncertain times right now but I’m hoping to make the most out of this year! It’ll be an interesting experience and I’m excited to see how it’ll play out! Don’t hesitate to join AB Samahan – trust me, it’s worth it!!
